About Anay
Anay Shah is a co-founding partner of Stepchange Ventures. He also co-hosts the Stepchange Show, a long-form series on the history of human progress through stories of infrastructure and technology.
Prior to Stepchange, Anay was a fintech and climate tech operator with 20 years of experience building global startups. He was an early employee at Remitly, where he led product, international expansion, and growth on the way to an IPO in 2021. More recently, as SVP of Global Business at Tala, Anay oversaw a ~$80M P&L and a 250+ person team.
Anay has lived and worked in 15+ emerging markets, including in India as an early employee at d.light, a global off-grid solar company. He brings this lived experience—and the urgency it instilled—to the climate crisis.
Anay serves on the boards of The Sunrise Project, a global climate justice NGO, and the California Environmental Voters Education Fund. He holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a BA from Wesleyan University. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children, and is a proud 'climate papa.'
Investment Philosophy
Anay brings an operator's lens to investing, shaped by decades of building and scaling unit-economic positive businesses. He looks for founders who combine deep market understanding with customer intuition and strong business fundamentals.
Anay provides hands-on support in go-to-market strategy, helping founders find product-market fit and scale what works. He also loves helping iterate on product strategy, assembling high-performing teams, navigating complex regulatory environments, fundraising, and storytelling.
Anay carries deep empathy for the founder journey—the obsession required at the early stages, the non-linear path, and the certain irrationality it takes to build a team and a business that can grow from zero to hundreds of millions in revenue.
