Nationwide intelligence on what's being built and who's building it.
Why we invested
Critical data about what is being built in America is stuck inside fragmented, outdated government systems. Yet this information is foundational to nearly every part of the energy transition and infrastructure buildout: utilities planning new transmission, contractors deploying heat pumps, financiers assessing project pipelines, and data centers forecasting load all depend on knowing what is happening on the ground. Without timely, accurate permit data, the entire ecosystem operates with unnecessary friction and delay. Shovels is solving this by creating the intelligence layer for the built environment.
The company is building the first nationwide building-permit data pipeline with daily updates, using AI that can navigate thousands of complex local databases. The result is accurate, real-time, and comprehensive visibility into construction activity across the U.S.—a dataset that has never meaningfully existed before. This infrastructure will serve stakeholders across electrification, construction, finance, and real estate, enabling faster planning, better decision-making, and more efficient deployment of climate and infrastructure projects at scale.
